When Rebels Become Stakeholders: Democracy, Agency and Social Change in India

Prof. Subrata K. Mitra, V. B. Singh, "When Rebels Become Stakeholders: Democracy, Agency and Social Change in India"
Sage Publications Pvt. Ltd 2009 | ISBN-10: 8178299453 | 344 Pages | PDF | 1,1 MB

When Rebels become Stakeholders: Democracy, Agency and Social Change in India, explores the agency of ordinary men and women in the making of democratic social change in India. The study is specific to India, but the issues are of general interest, particularly for the comparative politics of democratic social change.

In contrast to the majority of post-colonial states, India has achieved both democracy and social change. The authors focus on the political skills of India's voters and their leaders, instead of the essence of Indian culture to explain this remarkable phenomenon. The study draws on public opinion data on political information, attitudes, values and participation, derived from three national surveys of the Indian electorate held in 1971, 1996 and 2004, to explain this complex theme. It specifies the two main puzzles-the instrumentality of electoral agency in the making of India's social revolution, and implications of the findings of the study for the theory of democratic social change that underpin the study. The author provides an analysis of the empirical results, a resume of the empirical findings, theoretical implications of those findings for democracy and social change, questionnaires, explanation of the research designs used in the surveys, and the method of data collection.

Indian Sweets, Raksha Bandhan Special Recipes

Samsung Contributors, "Indian Sweets, Raksha Bandhan Special Recipes"
Samsung | 2004 | ISBN: R20090715A | 42 pages | PDF | 1,1 MB

A celebration of the bonds between a brother and sister, the family holiday of Raksha Bandhan (Rakhi) is observed in most Indian communities around the world.

In India and many Indian communities, anyone close to you who does not have a sister or brother of their own may be honored as brothers and sisters on this day.

The highlight of the observance is when a sister ties the rakhi, a silk string, around her brother's wrist. More elaborate modern versions may be gold or intricately woven strands of silk, but the traditional rakhi given to brothers on Raksha Bandhan is a single strand of silk that symbolizes the bond. The silk is delicate...almost invisible, but extremely strong. The brother usually gives a gift in return -- sometimes sweets, but very often a generous gift of money to help his sister through the year!

Gandhi An Autobiography: The Story of My Experiments With Truth

Gandhi, Gandhi An Autobiography: The Story of My Experiments With Truth
Biography | ISBN 0807059099 | 1993 Year | PDF | 1.9 Mb | 269 Pages

Gandhi's nonviolent struggles in South Africa and India had already brought him to such a level of notoriety, adulation, and controversy that when asked to write an autobiography midway through his career, he took it as an opportunity to explain himself. Although accepting of his status as a great innovator in the struggle against racism, violence, and, just then, colonialism, Gandhi feared that enthusiasm for his ideas tended to exceed a deeper understanding. He says that he was after truth rooted in devotion to God and attributed the turning points, successes, and challenges in his life to the will of God. His attempts to get closer to this divine power led him to seek purity through simple living, dietary practices (he called himself a fruitarian), celibacy, and ahimsa, a life without violence. It is in this sense that he calls his book The Story of My Experiments with Truth, offering it also as a reference for those who would follow in his footsteps. A reader expecting a complete accounting of his actions, however, will be sorely disappointed.

Mihir Bose, "The Magic Indian Cricket, Revised Edition"
Routledge | 2006-04-19 | ISBN: 0415356911 | 284 pages | PDF | 1,1 MB

In the last twenty years, Indian cricket has been transformed. With the arrival of global television networks, mass-media coverage and multinational sponsors, cricket has become big business and India has become the economic driving force in the world game. For the first time a developing country has become a major player in the international sports arena.

This fully updated and revised edition of Mihir Boses classic history is a unique account of the Indian cricket phenomenon. Drawing on a combination of extensive research and personal experience, Bose traces the development of the Indian game from its beginnings as a colonial pastime to its coming of age as a national passion and now a global commercial powerhouse. This illuminating study reveals Indian crickets central place in modern India's identity, culture and society.

Insightful, honest and challenging, Bose tackles the myths and controversies of Indian cricket. He considers the game in terms of race, caste, politics, national consciousness and ambition, money, celebrity and the media, evoking all the unpredictability, frustration and glory that is the magic of Indian cricket.

Indian Fairy Tales

"Indian Fairy Tales" collected and translated by Maive Stokes
Ellis & White, London (1880) | Pages 348 | ASIN: B0010P7UMU | PDF| English | 29 MB

Among the Asiatic folk-tales which seem likely to assist in their explanation, none are more copious or more useful than those of India. There the old religion has maintained itself with which so many of these stories are linked, and there the moral teaching still prevails which made its voice heard in other tales of the far-off time when they first became current. Any collection of genuine Indian Fairy Tales is therefore certain to be, not only of interest to the general reader, but also of real value to the specialist who devotes himself to the comparison of folk-tales.

Yoga: The Indian Tradition

Yoga: The Indian Tradition
Publisher: RoutledgeCurzon | ISBN: 0700712887 | edition 2003 | PDF | 206 pages | 1,02 mb

The Indian Tradition of yoga, first codified in the Yoga Sutra of Patañjali in the third or fourth century CE, constitutes one of the world's earliest and most influential traditions of spiritual practice. It is a tradition that, by the time of Patañjali, already had an extensive (if obscure) pre-history and one that was to have, after Patañjali, an extraordinarily rich and diverse future. As a tradition, yoga has been far from monolithic. It has embraced a variety of practices and orientations, borrowing from and influencing a vast array of Indic religious traditions down through the centuries.
Recent years have witnessed an increased production in scholarly works on the yoga tradition, which has helped to chart this complex and multifaceted evolution and to demonstrate the important role that it has played in the development of India's religious and philosophical traditions. And yet the popular perception of yoga in the West remains for the most part that of a physical fitness program, largely divorced from its historical and spiritual roots. The essays collected here provide a sense of the historical emergence of the classical system presented by Patañjali, a careful examination of the key elements, overall character and contemporary relevance of that system (as found in the Yoga Sutra) and a glimpse of some of the tradition's many important ramifications in later Indian religious history.

Philosophy of the Buddha: An Introduction

Philosophy of the Buddha is a philosophical introduction to the teaching of the Buddha. It carefully guides readers through the basic ideas and practices of the Buddha, including kamma (karma), rebirth, the not-self doctrine, the Four Noble Truths, the Eightfold Path, ethics, meditation, nonattachment, and Nibbâna (Nirvana). The book includes an account of the life of the Buddha as well as comparisons of his teaching with practical and theoretical aspects of some Western philosophical outlooks, both ancient and modern. Most distinctively, Philosophy of the Buddha explores how Buddhist enlightenment could enable us to overcome suffering in our lives and reach our full potential for compassion and tranquillity. This is one of the first books to introduce the philosophy of the Buddha to students of Western philosophy. Christopher Gowans' style is exceptionally clear and appropriate for anyone looking for a comprehensive introduction to this growing area of interest.

The Life of Buddhism

Bringing together fifteen essays by outstanding Buddhist scholars from Asia, Europe, and North America, this book offers a distinctive portrayal of the "life of Buddhism." The contributors focus on a number of religious practices across the Buddhist world, from Sri Lanka to New York, Japan to Tibet. The essays highlight not so much Buddhist doctrine or sacred texts, but rather the actual behavior and lived experience of Buddhist adherents.

A general introduction by Frank E. Reynolds and Jason A. Carbine provides a historical overview and briefly characterizes the three major variants of Buddhist tradition—the Hinayana/Theravada branch practiced in Sri Lanka and much of Southeast Asia; the Mahayana branch located most notably in East Asia; and the Vajrayana/Esoteric branch established in Tibet and Japan. It also takes note of a distinctive form of Buddhism that is now emerging among non-Asian practitioners in the West. The editors introduce each essay with a brief commentary that situates its contents within the Buddhist tradition as a whole. The pieces offer concise depictions and analyses of particular aspects of Buddhist life, including temple architecture and iconography, the consecration of sacred objects, meditative practices, devotional expressions, exorcisms, and pilgrimage journeys. Topics discussed also include the construction of religio-political and religio-social hierarchies, gender roles, the management of asocial behavior, and confrontations with dying and death.

Tamil Cinema: The Cultural Politics of India's other Film Industry

Routledge | 2009-04-30 | ISBN: 041549219X | 201 pages | PDF | 1,9 MB

Previously, the academic study of Indian cinema has focused primarily on Bollywood, despite the fact that the Tamil film industry, based in southern India, has overtaken Bollywood in terms of annual output. This book critically examines the cultural and cinematic representations in Tamil cinema. The chapters outline the cinema’s history and distinctive characteristics, and proceed to consider a number of important themes such as gender and the portrayal of women, religion, class, sexuality, cinematic genre and the politics of identity. Throughout, the book manages to link the analysis to wider social, political and cultural phenomena in Tamil and Indian society. As interest in Indian cinema grows across the globe, Tamil Cinema is an exciting contribution to an under-studied field, facilitating a fresh consideration of the existing body of scholarship on Indian cinema.
